SUMMARY: In Jason Richwine’s article “Why We Shouldn’t Raise Teacher Pay” published in July of 2014, he argued that teachers do not deserve a raise and their salaries should continue to remain the same. Richwine first discussed that a number of teachers do not want to be educators by stating that finding qualified teachers is becoming harder. I believe in treating each teacher as an individual. I try to give a clear amount of time speaking to my staff, and allowing them to know I am there for them professionally. I do not recommend instant responses to questions or solutions, but ask inquiries as a way to help staff uncover them.
So even if our government is completely opposed to increasing funding, we need to at least spent a good amount of the funds they get on the teachers because they are the ones who impact the kids most and this is proven through research that shows a good teacher impacts the learning environment in a positive way and will boost test scores and overall quality. In addition, the number of students that have dropped out of school has skyrocketed in recent years. A possible reason for this could be the changes that schools have made in k-12. As the war on drugs broke out in the 1980s, many schools took the initiative to crack down harder on their students in an effort to maintain school order. Due to the harsher drug policies, schools initiated the zero-tolerance approach. Seen as highly controversial, many wonder how well the zero-tolerance policy works. While some advocate the need for a no-nonsense approach in the face of increasing school violence, evidence has shown that it is actually debilitating to students learning when schools use suspension and expulsion as a means to maintain control. Not to mention, that the zero-tolerance approach has raised numerous questions on the treatment of minorities, inconsistent application, and many other school issues.
First of all, students should not be paid for good grades due to not needed pressure. The NEA claims : many teachers say, “Paying students for good grades leads to practical problems in their classrooms, including pressure to inflate grades and conflict with students and parents.” This means students are more likely to be in bad moods and have bad relationships with parents and classmates. If some kids get money and the rest don’t, arguments will break out. In a classroom, students are supposed to be respectful to each other in order to have and efficient working environment.
