It gives me immense pleasure to recommend Rachel De Block for the ARRID Total Woman of Tomorrow Scholarship. I have known Rachel for two years. She is an exceptional young woman, and ideally suited for this honor.

Rachel has known from an early age that she wanted to go into sports medicine or physical therapy. In pursuit of that vision, she set a goal early in her ninth grade year to excel academically in preparation for college. She has worked tirelessly to meet this goal, and will graduate this year as Class Valedictorian. This achievement is a real testament to her tenacity and persistence in an advanced, college preparatory curriculum. She also loves sports, and knowing that she wanted to make it her career she has poured her effort outside of the classroom into becoming an excellent athlete. She has excelled in both Basketball and Volleyball, winning numerous awards and championships. She also chose to play softball in her junior year, without ever previously playing the sport. Her natural athletic ability and determination enabled her to become a starter by midpoint of her junior season at third base and starting second base in her senior year.

Because of her previously mentioned moral and ethical standards, she often confronts compromise on the part of her friends and fellow students. On numerous occasions she has endured the ridicule and snubs of her peers for living a life of high moral integrity. Through it all, she has overcome these obstacles and continually demonstrated an ability to set herself apart for higher goals and aspirations. She also purposed to learn to fend for herself in the work world, starting her own business at the age of thirteen (pressing clothes) and babysitting.
