Reflection: I Am A Columbus State Transient Student

I am a Columbus State transient student, transferring to The Ohio State University with a Human Nutrition major. While in High School, I was a dual enrolled student at Ohio State taking general education courses. Most of the classes I took were very general Math, English and Language courses. Based on the courses I have taken in my college career so far, I think I am very much so being educated in the spirit of Consilience. All of the classes I have taken here at Columbus State, and even at OSU, have overlapped in the information being taught. For this semester I can definitely say all of my classes have overlapped; Psychology, Biology, Chemistry and English. Organic food has become popular way of doing this because of the benefits of eating nutritious organic food while supporting healthy eating patterns and avoiding pesticides. According to Sandra Steingraber, chemicals in certain foods, tuna as she focuses on, can cause prenatal defects along with many long-term issues. “Children with conventional diets, had on average, nine times more insecticide residues in their urine than those who ate organic produce” (Steingraber 541). Many parents are starting to feed their children locally grown or organic foods because of all the pesticides. The pesticides in a majority of foods today affect children in many different ways, and as Sandra mentioned, the mercury in some fish affect children prenatally, which is detrimental to their growth patterns. The chemicals that are sprayed on foods making them worse for consumption are not only affecting who is eating them, but also the environment. Al Gore mentions in his writing “The Climate Emergency” that our climate and environment is declining due to human actions and pesticides are a large contributor. “We know for sure that the earth is so big we cant have a big impact on it, but that’s just not so” (Gore 868). Many think they cannot individually negatively impact the earth based on what they choose to eat. If someone eats food from a farmer that uses pesticides, they are just encouraging it. Eating organically grown food is more nutritious and is better in the long run. This is why nutrition is becoming so big in America; many are starting to realize how bad pesticides are not only for us, but for the environment as well, resulting in a change of eating
