Reflection On My Writing Course

Entering this course, I feel that I had a bit of a false sense of confidence in my writing capabilities. Although I began as a good writer, there were plenty of valuable strategies that I learned in this course to really strengthen my academic writing, and I’m sure there are many more techniques that I will learn in future courses. I was always very apprehensive when I heard that in college I’d have to write 10-15 page research papers, because I didn’t understand how I could talk about one topic enough to fill that much space. The longest papers I had written before English 131 were 3 to 4 pages. Both my major papers exceeded this length and I quickly became conscious to the fact that I was very capable of writing more than this, as long as I was sure to broaden my thoughts and expand on my analysis, as well as take advantage of outside sources to enhance the complexity of my writing. Being able to write a variety of different kinds of compositions is a skill that I will need to continue cultivating for college, my future jobs and career, and adulthood in general. I have realized that I really enjoy the process of writing, as it is very cathartic and requires me to use my analytical and organizational skills. With each paper I write, it becomes easier to transform my thoughts into words eloquently. There is a certain satisfaction that comes at the completion of a major writing assignment – similar to completing a marathon, but instead of it being a physical game, it’s a mental one; one that requires lots of brain power. The finished result is something I can look back on at any time and express pride over how it turned out and how much work into I put into
