The key features of an effective play based learning environment are that children able to play uninterrupted for long periods of time and are able to choose from a range of resources and areas, letting them choose activities on their own accord. Children are able to develop a wide variety of skills by having lots of various resources to choose from. 2.5 Explain why both adult initiated and child initiated play and learning activities are important for children from birth to five years In an Early Years setting we allow children to participate in child initiated play. By allowing children to choose which resources they would like to play with let’s them explore their favourite type of activity, and have a sense of independence.
For this extended assignment I am going to focus on play and the importance of play is for children and young people. I am going to focus on children up to age of 6. “Play is a spontaneous and active process in which thinking, feeling and doing can flourish.” (http://www.playwales.org.uk/ ). It is important that children are able to receive holistic care while in a play environment, both inside and outside. Some of the principles which would apply to both indoor and outdoor play include a child centred practice, ensuring the child 's welfare and safety, promoting a child 's rights, and enabling a child to reach their full potential. It is important that we provide a child centred practice, as it promotes a child 's learning and development through play. By having a child centred approach, we should support the children giving them guidance, but to allow the opportunities for them to learn independently, instead of taking over an activity and showing them. Before the child go in he or she needs to plan head the center they are going to play for 45 minutes, In Play Planning, children plan their play before playing in centers, as children plan their play, they draw a picture of their plan that helps them remember what they are going to do. Play Plan typically describes the role and actions a child will engage in during the first few minutes of intentional make-believe play. Play Planning is a great activities child to develop foundational executive functions and self-regulation skills, at the same time as core academic skills are developed. They organize and create pretend scenarios on their own; they make their own props and decided what they want to with, teachers help them to remind each their role they picked earlier. Children play with other children and talk about what they’re going to play together, by saying I am going to be the mom and I will be feeding my baby, and she will role play to the mother of the house until it’s time to clean up.
During this developmental interview, I chose to conduct an observation/interview study with my one of my cousin’s child. This child is a 4 year old girl and will be identified as “child K” in relation to her first name. Her parents had no problem letting me interview her, but I had them stay in the same room as us. The purpose of this interview was to observe the child’s physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development. I observed her behavior and gave her several tests to show how well she has progressed.
Analysis and learning assessment Children’s development is significant from the first few years because it influences their present and future. Children’s development refers children’s physical growth, as well as their skill to learn the social, emotional, behaviour, communication skills they need for their future lives (Raising Children Network, 2017). Also, the experience children have in those years support shape the adults they will become in the future (Raising Children Network, 2017). During the play experience, there are three important aspects that are critical for children’s development, including the language, the use of imagination, and problem solving.
When arranging activities for play based learning within early years provision there can be barriers towards it from taking place. Before the week begins, planning is needed. When planned activities are prepared resources are needed too. Resources can become a barrier towards play. This is because the resources that were needed were not available to be used.
The plan-do-review process is the most important segment of the daily routine in which children make choices about what they will do, carry out their ideas and plans while playing in the different areas of the classroom, and reflect upon their activities and experiences with adults and other children. This cycle aims to help play become meaningful. The plan-do-review process fosters children’s development of initiative, reflection, problem solving, responsibility, and they can see themselves as individuals who can act on decisions. Children experience the power of independence and are conscious of their intentions which support the development of purpose and confidence.
Your work changed my view of self by realizing that I don’t have a bad life. Growing up, my parents would always fight, drank a lot, my dad was rarely home, my mom was unhappy, and I never really felt like I had an actual family. I witnessed a lot of bad things that happened between my parents when they fought and is something I’d never wish upon anyone. My parents got divorced when i was 9, which I took very hard because I had to live with my mom by court and I missed my dad a lot.
I agree that play-based learning offers diverse opportunities for children to explore, discover and create, they can also discover new things and communicate with peer during free-play time. Frobel said that “Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child 's soul” (Froebel, 1887). He believed in the importance of play in a child’s learning as creative activity. Play provided the means for a child’s intellectual, social, emotional and physical development which are necessary elements in educating the “whole” children allowing them to use all imaginative powers and physical movements to explore their interests.
Throughout this course of four weeks, my perspective of child development has changed drastically in this short amount of time. This was my first class that was related to child development and there was a lot of material that was important to learn and understand. I came to this class with not much knowledge, but I am definitely leaving this class with an abundance of information that I will be able to use in my career or just in general. Discontinuous Within the process of child development, my view is based upon that is children are constantly growing through stages which is a discontinuous process.
