The Crackdown in Residence: the Bad and the Ugly

Residence is a sanctum of independence, learning, experience, and understanding, however without rules, the house would crumble in overwhelming chaos. In residence, students are given rules to allow a level of freedom while maintaining sanity within it. Over recent years, the list of rules has grown which causes more and more restrictions to what students can actually do in residence. Some rules are understandable, however, certain rules, formulated in panic, to prevent potential injury. Despite the intentions of those who formulate and those who enforce the rules, the implementation of these rules are causing students to revolt in frustration. In residence, students learn skills in communication, problem solving, and respect. Residence is a means of independence, where a student is now away from their parents, and is free to live for their own and make their own decisions. However, residence is bittersweet, although a student is free from their parents, they are still under the restrictions of ResLife: the equivalent to parents that one cannot argue. ResLife claims to offer the opportunity for students to expand their horizon and to make connections with others students; subsequently, when given the opportunity to reach out to others, ResLife strips that possibility from the fingertips of the students. Each residence has a certain allotted amount of socials that they can host in their house lounge. Each residence student is restricted to one guest, a policy strictly enforced by Campus Security and Campus Patrol. This limit is detrimental to student sociability. Residences that have a greater amount of students are able to have a larger social than those that are significantly smaller. ResLife claims that limiting the number of guests per household member is “to enforce safety,” and this is to avoid “overcrowding and extreme crowd-like behaviour” (Residence Contract, 2014). In no way is ResLife applying its motto to allow students to grow as individuals. ResLife is resulting in students hiding behind lies and deceit so they may retain their
