Living on/off Campus : Freshmen vs. Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors Each year, college freshmen around the world become excited and anxious to attend Clark Atlanta University. Many of them hope to meet new people, go to wild parties, live in a dorm with a roommate, and have a fun, fulfilling four years. Then, freshmen year ends, and students, after enjoying their freedom hate going back home for the summer. Many students become accustom to staying out late, going where they want to when they want to and not having an authoritative figure watching over them. Many students decide to stay in Atlanta and rent apartments with their friends. Afterwards, some of them continue to live off campus. Although this mandate ensures that students will have a space to live in and food to eat, it prevents students from having freedom, a personable place and from learning independence. College administrators should not mandate sophomores, juniors, or seniors to live on campus; many students do not like the dorm lifestyle and want their own space, many of them want more freedom and many of them believe it is cheaper than room and board. Students who live on campus typically share a dorm with one or more students. When sharing a small space with others it can be frustrating. Students have to consider their roommates and possibly alter their habits. For example, some students must adjust to noisy, obnoxious roommates while other students learn to share their food, electronics, irons and any other object(s) one roommate may have that the other may not. “In on campus housing the walls are very thin and you need to be careful of making too much noise”, Heyen states. Living in a dorm you have to be much more considerate of your noise level: considerably on a college campus because many students may be trying to study and remain focused. Although very good, only freshmen should be required to live on campus and under the codes of conduct. They need the strict guidance of the school to keep them focused and on track. It is also in the best interest of the students to be involved on campus, especially freshmen year. Sophomore are more mature and should be able to make their own decision on where they want to live. Although living on campus is convenient and less responsibility , many students would rather have more freedom, their own space and not have to share with others and save money as well. Living off campus also gives students more independence and the responsibility to make the right decisions. Lastly, living off campus teaches students responsibility and gives them a head start into
