He was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois, just south of Chicago as the second of his six brothers. His mom was an Opera singer and music teacher, and his dad was a doctor and avid naturalist. After he finished high school in 1917 he worked as a journalist for a while before he became an ambulance driver in Italy for WWI, as he was unable to be a soldier due to his poor eyesight. He slowly reels it in and for two hours the old man and the fish battle until finally the old man throws his harpoon at the fish and hits his heart, killing the fish. The old man is proud of his victory, and straps the fish to the side of the boat for the long trip back home. He sets sail and is making good time when a shark appears in the water, taking a 40 pound bite out of the fish. The old man harpoons the shark in the head, but loses the harpoon in the process. Now several sharks are circling the boat, each taking huge bites of the fish one at a time, while the old man battles them off first with a knife, then with a club, and then with the steering oar. Soon he has lost all his weapons though, and the fish is completely eaten by the sharks until nothing remains but a skeleton. He makes it back to his home and collapses on the beach before he struggles to his bed and falls asleep. The next morning everyone is talking about the 18 foot skeleton on the beach, and the young boy brings coffee to the old man, while the old man talks about how he was defeated by the sharks.
