Gary Ridgway was born the middle child of 3in Salt Lake City, Utah in the year of 1949. His mother “Mary Rite Ridgway” and Father “Thomas Newton Ridgway” were less then great parents. Relatives describe his mother as the dominate parent and said that Gary had witnessed many violent altercations between his parents. Ridgway had a habit of bedwetting into his early teens, which earned him an incredible amount of embarrassment from his mother. Gary had feeling of sexual attraction and anger towards his mother, and his father used to tell Ridgway stories of coworkers engaging in acts of necrophilia to his son. He joined the U.S. Navy and was sent to Vietnam, where he served on a supply ship and even at one point saw combat. When Ridgway was serving in the military he started have relations with prostitutes and eventually contracted gonorrhea. Meanwhile, his wife was also cheating on him; the relationship ended within the year. Gary, soon after, married Marcia Loren Brown, which he had a son with in 1975. Some of the traits of Gary’s antisocial personality disorder are: no concern for the rights or feeling of other people, willing to engage in wide ranging criminal behavior which they show no remorse, no regard for victims, deceit and manipulation. This Antisocial Personality Disorder allowed Garry to kill prostitutes and not feel remorse for it. When Ridgway was child, he would frequently wet the bed; as a result, his mother would bathe him, washing his genitals which would sexually arouse him. He started to gain sexual attractions towards his mother. Gary knew this was wrong and he thought if he could just get rid of his mother the feelings that he was experiencing would go away. This is how Gary started to feel aroused by his mother and start fantasizing about killing her to stop feeling aroused and disgusted with himself. Gary also had an overactive sex drive. There is evidence of this when he was a child, being attracted to his mother. While in Vietnam, he started having sex with prostitutes. He continued to use prostitutes during his second marriage and he would have sex with his victims before killing them. The combination of an overactive sex drive, antisocial personality disorder, and his attraction to his mother all were contributing factors to Garry’s killing spree.
