Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian Renaissance polymath who did and studied things such as inventing, architecture, science, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, and astronomy. In addition to all of this he is considered one of the best and most widely known painters in the world. While da Vinci was definitely a typical well rounded “Renaissance man” his discoveries within the field of astronomy helped to influence astronomers for generations to come. In addition the studies he do involving the Earth’s moon are still somewhat used today by leading astronomers. Da Vinci even had designed and/or had sketched out versions of the submarine, the helicopter, and the armored tank and many other more simple inventions such as the alarm clock, snorkel, and a version of the robot.
Leonardo da Vinci born in 1452 in Anchiano, Tuscany which is now Italy, close to the town of Vinci that provided the surname we know him by nowadays. During the time he was alive he was known just as Leonardo or as “Il Florentine,” since he had lived near Florence. In addition, da Vinci’s parents weren’t married and his mother, Caterina (who was a peasant) married another man while da Vinci was a young boy and she then started a new family.
