Every late-September, the streets of New York seem to instantly light up as well-dressed fashion-lovers rush through the streets in anticipation for the following seven days ahead of them. These events can only be described as the widely anticipated New York Fashion Week. Over 232,000 people attend the semi-annual, glitter enthused affair. With a revenue reaching 900 million dollars, it is no surprise that the event has become a staple in American history. New York Fashion Week is a chance for designers to show both the press and public what they have decided is “in” and what is “out” of style for the year to come. Often times brands such as Chanel, Dior, Moschino, Givenchy and Oscar De La Renta are known as “houses.” These are the people that display garments at New York Fashion Week.
Anna Wintour: Not only is she the editor-in-chief of American Vogue but she is the queen of Fashion. Anna Wintour knows everyone and everything related to the Industry and she is looked at as the deciding factor of what is important to Fashion. With her legendary black framed glasses and harsh personality, Wintour has dominated the industry since the year 1975 and will continue to hold the title until the end of time. “She's the perfectly coiffed monstre sacré of the fashion world” (Levine 1).
Models: When one hears the word “model” they often think of a starving, cookie cutter figure who goes day to day thriving in their own excellence. What people do not seem to recognize is that the models of New York Fashion Week tend to be the main factor of the event. “Looking in from the outside, the job of modeling seems fairly simple: Basically it’s just smiling for the camera, right? In reality the work is a bit more involved than that” (Wissinger 162).
