Esports, also known as competitive gaming , is rapidly growing and becoming a worldwide phenomenon that is being taken a lot more seriously. Esports are giving gamers careers that pay by three figures or more and making them celebrities in most cases. These competitive games have been around since the 1980's and it is rapidly gaining popularity because "games in general will become even more accepted in society" (Lockley). The first game that got press coverage was Space Invaders. Space Invaders was an Atari game that was based off the amount of points you can score. The player controlled a space ship at the bottom of the screen and shot white aliens that were descending to destroy the spaceship. Space Invaders was the first game to get a national tournament. Esports have opened up career paths and are making more people celebrities around the world. Gaming is now more socially acceptable and people are not afraid to show their inner nerd or geek. It has shown to be a very profitable and fun business because you can get paid and live on a very comfortable amount of money for playing a video game. Technology has reached that point where people can stay at home and make over one hundred thousand dollars for playing their favorite game for six to eight hours a day. For most successful streamers and gamers, this is their full time job. Esports are continuing to grow and it's not slowing down. Every year, more people are joining the Esport community and innovating on how competitions flow and work (Jackson).
