Joe, you are correct that J. Edgar hoover deserves credit and recognition for the changes he brought to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Before his appointment as director in 1924, the FBI was seen as corrupt and inefficient (Cooper, 2011). Cronkhite (2013) credits Hoover with bringing professionalism to the bureau. While some of Hoover’s tactics were controversial, no one was able to question his patriotism or Americanism. Hoover held strong anti-communist views and had the bureau wiretap Americans suspected of being sympathetic to communism (Cooper, 2011).
