During the Reconstruction Era which took place between the years of 1865-1877, has marked one of the most powerful years throughout history. The union won the civil war in favor of the north, the Emancipation Proclamation was established a few years back, and slavery was abolished in the southern states which gave blacks equal rights and opportunities as others. Then, a fearless and rebellious group was created. This group was founded in Tennessee in 1866 and had huge disapproval for civil rights towards the blacks. They named themselves the Ku Klux Klan.
The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
Founded as a social group in Tennessee in 1866, the KKK consisted of former confederates and radicals. Their main goals were to fight against Republican politic control and freed blacks. They were able to accomplish this through acts of social and political terrorism. Their methods ranged from riding around on horseback in outlandish costumes to intimidate black voters and white republicans, to the murder of anyone who got in their way. During 1868, the Freedman’s Bureau reported 336 cases of murder or assault with intent to kill across Georgia from January 1 to November 15 of that year.
By the 1920s, four million people were in the Klan. By 1970, the klan had branches in nearly every southern state (Ku Klux Klan). The Ku Klux Klan was a vehicle for the White Southern Resistance to deliver its message of “White Southern Supremacy”. The Ku Klux Klan dedicated itself to an underground group of attack against the Republican leaders and voter (both white and black voters).They did this to reverse the Radical Reconstruction and restore white supremacy in the South.
The 1920s was the period where many drastic changes occurred in the U.S. history. During the 1920s, in different groups like Women, radicals, European immigrants, African American, or Mexican Americans, many changes raised in the United States. groups like Radicals and Immigrants were targeted in the red scare and, also new restrictions on immigration reflected prejudice among the non-Anglo-Saxon group. But I believe, Ku Klux Klan had the most significant changes affecting them from 1919-1929. The plan was organized by the white southerners for native whites.
The rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920’s In the 1920’s the Ku Klux Klan reemerged since they had been inactive since the 1870’s. In the 1920’s America experienced some very impactful events that will for ever shape our history. The great wall street crash of 1929 which led the country into the Great Depression.
The Ku Klux Klan was formed to make a superior white race (West’s Encyclopedia of American Law, 2005). The first leader, or “grand wizard”, of the KKK was the leading confederate general at the time, Nathan Bedford Forrest (History.com Staff, 2009). The Klan was made up of a lot of confederate veterans (History.com Staff, 2009). “At it’s peak in the 1920s, Klan membership exceeded four million people nationwide,” according to History.com.
The roaring twenties was a time period where society changed and the economy was booming. During this same time period, one of the the biggest racial organizations evolved and grew bigger. This organization is known as the Klu Klux Klan (KKK). The KKK group was mainly focused on African Americans, but that was not the only race that they target. The group actually discriminated against many different types of immigrants who were moving to America at the time.
The Ku Klux Klan also known as the KKK, terrorized the nation in 1920. The aim of the Ku Klux Klan is and was to declare white supremacy and maintain a strict racial hierarchy, they employed violence and acts of terror to achieve this. It began in 1865, where the world saw the first Klan sought out to overthrow the Republican state governments during the reconstruction era. The second Klan started up in 1915 and by the 1920s it was a national organization, with presence in not only South America but in New England, the Midwest and across the Northern U.S. The Klan had nearly 4 million members by 1924, who would all wear robes, light crosses on fire, read Klan newspapers and participate in political campaigns on local and national levels.
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is the oldest and most famous white supremacist American hate groups that emerged in 1865 and terrorized African Americans, but lost support during the 1870s due to the passing of the Congressional Ku Klux Act that declared martial law and imposed heavy penalties and military force against the KKK. However, during the 1910s and 1920s, the KKK experienced a national resurgence and recruited approximately five million supporters. The resurgence of the KKK in the 1920s had many radical changes to it, which is most notable in the ideology of the KKK. The ideology of the KKK during the 1920s was not just simply based on the notion of hating African Americans due to the bitter loss of the civil war that ended slavery, but had
(Mcveigh 1464). The Ku Klux Klan induced terror on those they targeted after they were deemed un-American, for not being christian, and migrating from outside of the United States. "The son of an officer in the original Klan, he had always dreamed of reviving the order, which he envisioned as the ultimate fraternal lodge” (Mcveigh 1466). After the fall of the first Ku Klux Klan in 1870, the Ku Klux Klan began its resurgence in 1915, then rapidly gained support until they reached their peak in 1920. In the early 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan saw a resurgence due to increased racism and xenophobia, which resulted in their increased racial violence, as well as political and economic influence in the United States.
History of the Ku Klux Klan The Ku Klux Klan was defined as a white racist organization founded in 1866. Throughout history the organization used acts of terrorism. They mainly attacked African Americans because they were granted civil rights. Although they did attack other people that didn’t view them as “racially pure”.
According to Andrew Selepak, “one of the most recognized groups in the white extremist movement is the Ku Klux Klan which is separated into different organizations with chapters in the United States and around the world. Although the Ku Klux Klan is only one of many white extremist groups in the world, it is the historical basis for the white racial extremist movement with a history spanning nearly 150 years” (Selepak, 2012). The purpose of the Ku Klux Klan was to terrorize newly freed African Americans and suppress their rights. After its founding, the Klan quickly spread to practically every southern state.
Ku Klux Klan The Ku Klux Klan began in 1861 founded by six young college students, they believed in white supremacy and would use violence to get their point across African Americans. 1861, the beginning of a secret organization who believed in white supremacy and used violence to get their point across America. African American history has changed drastically by the acts of the Ku Klux Klan brought. Many died with their freedom at hand and many lived by the mercy of the K.K.K (Ku Klux Klan American History).
Rising of the KKK was arranged due to them believing in white supremacy. They believed whites were higher than black and they were superior, due thinking that whites were closer to God. During the slavery period in American, the KKK rose. Due to threatening and frightening African Americans to stay in their place as slaves. African Americans overthrowing and becoming superior, was what the KKK feared.
