Islam is a monotheistic faith who teaches that there is only one incomparable God, named Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of God. It is currently the world's second-largest religion and the fastest-growing major religion in the world, with over 1.8 billion followers, also known as Muslims. Islam was founded in 610 A.D and it originated in Mecca & Medina in the 7th century. Muhammad was the founder of Islam and mentioned he was visited by Angel Gabriel where Gabriel then told him that Muhammad was to be a prophet for Allah. Islam is similar to Christianity & Judaism but the religions still differ because Muslims do not view Jesus as divine and they believe Muhammad is the final prophet of Allah. Timbuktu was the center of learning which was famous for its Islamic scholars. It had several universities and the most famous was the University of Sankore. At the University of Sankore, some of its basic learning involved the Quran, Islamic studies, law and literature. Once these subjects were mastered, students studied specific fields such as medicine, surgery, astronomy, math, physics, geography, art and history. As Africans converted more to Islam, more of them learned Arabic. Arabic's wrote about Africans using animals, plants & minerals to cure diseases. Stars were used to determine the seasons. Arabic let West African traders who had spoken different languages to have easier communication- rulers kept records in Arabic.
