In today’s schooling system, there are many issues, to say the least. In America, schools charge high rates. Often, colleges have lopsided priorities that cause the high tuition and student life rates. These high costs can cause a variety of health issues, poor graduation rates, and poor job placement rates. Despite all of these issues, there has been little reform in the American college system in years past in order to fix these issues.
The biggest hindrance in the American schooling system is the rising cost of education. Many students don’t have the funds necessary to pay for their schooling, and do not receive enough help from scholarships, grants, or financial aid. Since working students have limited time, this can cause them to have lower grades than their non-working counterparts. These students have less time and often don’t get the amount of sleep they need. This constant tiredness can lead to many health problems, as well as academic problems. Studies say that if students work off campus, their grades tend to be lower, no matter how many hours worked. If they work on campus, grades are typically only lower if the student works over 20 hours (Lederman). With the average cost of college today ringing in at $23,872, $10,000 more than 30 years ago (with inflation considered), making minimum wage, many students have to work more than 20 hours a week to fund their education, and on-campus jobs are very hard to find (Tuition Costs). Despite colleges recommending that students work no more than 15 hours a week, roughly half of working students are clocking in over 20 hours each week (O'Shaughnessy). The stress brought on by juggling school, work, and lack of sleep can cause a variety of health problems like heart disease, asthma, obesity, and depression
