Robin Summerfield, an award-winning Journalist from Canada, writes the article “Gendered Packaging Influences What We Buy, How We Perceive Food Products,” published on October 23, 2015 on the CBC News website to discuss that most food products that are perceived as feminine will be bought by women and products perceived as masculine will be bought by men. One idea Summerfield explains is that the biggest influence in product sales is its appearance and how the product is advertised. Products that target women are typically packaged in bright colors such as pink or purple while products that target men typically have earthy tones and are very plain in detail. While walking through the grocery store, I notice that the packaging for yogurt that was low calories, and no fat, tend to have a purple or pink design. On the other hand, the yogurts that were the unhealthiest promoted more protein and had basic designs with earth tones such as red and green. Moreover, Summerfield discusses promotion ads that influence gendered packaging and explains “you might see a woman twirl around her pink dining room while spooning yogurt from a small cup and extolling its low-fat virtues. Contrast that with ultra-fit men diving off cliffs, snowboarding on remote mountains, and slam-dunking basketball in slow motion while promoting an energy drink.” (Par 3) This explains how stereotypes influence how food products are packaged for both genders or to appeal to a certain one. In addition, I work at a subway which involves the idea of particular genders choosing a
