Taylor has written us this amazing novel called, Role of thunder hear my cry. This book is told through the mouth of a young colored girl who has many courageous moments, and stands up for her convictions. This courageous young girl’s name is Cassie Logan. Cassie proves her courage by standing up for herself and her family, protecting her friends, and trying to keep things right. When cassie does these courageous things, it shows how egear she is to make everything equal. In one of the chapters of Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, Cassie, Stacey and T.J go to Strawberry to shop, but little did Cassie know, she was going to grow a lot that day. The challenge that Cassie faced was when Big Ma made Cassie apologise to Lillian Jean. Cassie and Stacey were going to get the groceries, and gave their list to Mr. Barnett. He was just about to get the order filled, when a white woman walked in and gave him her slip. He immediately put the kids slip down on the table and goes to fill the white womans order. Cassie thinks that he just forgot about them, so she tells him that they were there first. He does not respond, so she tugs on his shirt. Then Mr. Barnett Snapped at her and yelled out, “Whose little N***er is this?” This makes Cassie really frustrated. This makes her so frustrated in fact that she says back that she is nobody’s little N***er! This causes her getting kicked out of the store, and bumping into Lillian Jean. Lillian Jean then gets really mad at cassie and pushes her into the street. She then tells her to apologize. Cassie first says sorry, but Lillian said that what she said wasn’t good enough since a little nasty black girl just bumped into her. Cassie’s response was,”I ain’t nasty, and if youre so afraid of getting bumped, walk down there yourself.” This concludes to her getting her arm twisted by Mr.Simms, and Big Ma telling Cassie to apologize.
