Roll of thunder hear my cry introduces Cassie,a young girl who is willing to go above and beyond to fight the injustice of segregation, and to face her broadest fears. Cassie Logan has many courageous moments in this book but the three most challenging moments are standing up to Lillian Jean, Standing up for little man, and standing up for herself at the barnett store. Through Cassie´s actions she has proved she loves her family, loves the land, and knows that segregation is NOT RIGHT. She knows that equal rights is not an option in that day and age, but she will still try to make a difference in the world.

To begin with, this book is about a black family in Mississippi in the 1930 's, told from the point of view of the only daughter, Cassie Logan, a fourth-grader. It shows the harsh realities of segregation, racism, and the oppression of blacks in the South during this time period. The Logan family is having to get along without their father because he has to go away to work. They are better off than most black families because they have their own land.
Though it’s often difficult, if not impossible to find, the constant search for justice is an important theme for specific characters in the book, as well as for the entire book itself The power of one person’s influence or a family’s influence happens in the novel. For example, the Wallace family’s racist attitude toward the Logan family and other black families influences many of the other whites in the story to hold racist attitudes. This is because the Wallace family owns a local store in the area that doesn’t allow black patrons. After experiencing turbulent events in her life Cassie soon realizes what racism is. Near the middle of the book readers see Cassie make her change as an African American female faced with racism. While speaking to Mama, Cassie states “white people may demand our respect, but what we give them is not respect but fear’’ (p. 129). Cassie’s mother tries to calm Cassie by stating, “baby, we have no choice of color we’re born or who our parents are or whether we’re rich or poor” (p.129). As a reader it is clear Cassie is not happy with being the minority within her community.
