Romayn Acasuzo is a 5-year-old boy who was born at 39 weeks. Romayn achieved early developmental motor milestones within expected age ranges such as sitting up at 6 months and walking at 13 months, however, Romayn’s mother began to notice decreased socialization skills, behavior difficulties and speech delays.
Romayn was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child's ability to communicate and interact with others. ASD is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, and uneven intellectual development, often with intellectual disabilities. Romayn presents with overall low muscle tone, which affects age appropriate fine motor and gross motor skill development. His upper body range of motion is within normal limits, however he exhibits decreased upper body strength and poor trunk control. Romayn demonstrates fair eye contact but is inconsistent when responding to his name. Romayn displays various self-stimulatory behaviors to self-calm such as hand flapping and vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile for self-stimulation by continuously rubbing hand on different types of textures. Roman displays high impulsivity due to sensory seeking behavior. He requires close super supervision due to poor safety awareness and max assistance when completing gross motor task. Romayn’s occupations, for example, play is impacted by his diagnosis due to the fact that he does not play well with others and requires maximum redirection to initiate and continue the
