Coming of age is defined as the process of growing up and maturing. It is the transition to adulthood and the real world. Experiencing loss plays a huge role in Romeo and Juliet. Specifically, Romeo Montague experiences loss as a young man and has trouble turning his life around. Mercutio, Romeo's close friend, is killed in a duel with Tybalt. This event leads Romeo to make impulsive decisions, ultimately resulting in his banishment from Verona. Furthermore, Romeo's experience of loss intensifies with the death of Juliet. After mistakenly believing that Juliet had died, Romeo takes his own life in grief. This tragic event not only demonstrates the depth of Romeo's love for Juliet, but also showcases the profound impact of loss on his emotional state. One specific example of Romeo maturing as a result of experiencing loss is when he faces the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt. The loss of Mercutio marks a turning point for Romeo, as it forces him to confront the consequences of the ongoing feud between the Capulets and Montagues.
