In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the two protagonists, Romeo and Juliet, fall in love, even though they are from families that are enemies. They end up getting married in secret due to this. The two characters are corrupted by their own character flaws, traditions, and the people around them, which ultimately ends in their deaths. The two characters are quite young, with Romeo being sixteen and Juliet being thirteen. They are both quick to make life-changing decisions, while never really thinking about the consequences of their actions. An example of this is when they chose to get married in secret one day after meeting each other. Along with that, Juliet is being pressured into getting married by her parents and many others around her. Because of the way that Juliet was raised and the way that her mother would talk about marriage, Juliet may have been more inclined to marry Romeo because she thinks that it is normal to do that at such a young age. Juliet’s mother, Lady Capulet, would try to guilt her into getting married by saying, “I was your mother much upon these years that you are now a maid” (I.iii.78). Which is her saying that she gave birth to Juliet at around the same age as she is currently (thirteen, almost fourteen). All of the guilt-tripping and persuading that Lady Capulet did could have made Juliet feel like she needed to get married, even if it was with someone her family would not approve of. Another way that Romeo and Juliet are corrupted is by other people around them. Both Juliet’s nurse and Friar Lawrence are fine with all of the things that they are doing, and many times they are actually helping the two out.
