For the theme deception, I have chosen to explore the connection between four different texts. In both The Devotion of Suspect X(novel) written by Keigo Higashino and Romeo and Juliet(movie) directed by Baz Luhrmann have shown a connection of deceiving others. The texts The Great Gatsby(movie) directed by Baz Luhrmann and How I Became One of ‘Those People’ written by Kate Jones have shown a connection of self-delusion.

In Romeo and Juliet, the director had express the idea of deceiving others. The first deception shown is when the Capulets held an old accustomed feast. To meet the girl Romeo love, Romeo and Benvolio attended the party while they mask themselves. Although the newscast announced ‘If you be not of the house of Montague come and crush a cup of wine’, Montague is not welcome to the party. This because Capulet and Montague were enemies since in ancient time and serious gunfights often occur. So that, if Romeo wants to meet Rosaline he must wear a mask to deceive the guards. Both texts are surrounded in a central idea deceiving due to love. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet risks her life to drunk the potion to deceive her family whereas Ishigami also risks his life to deceive the police. Both of their purpose of deceiving is they use their own way to protect or save the person they love. From our reader’s perspective is Juliet betrayed her family for a boy she just met and Ishigami cover for the murder. Some might thinks they are bad because they deceive other and others might think they are stupid because they had risked their life to deceive. However, all of our opinions are from a viewer’s perspective and we don’t understand the feeling of Juliet and Ishigami. Therefore both texts had expressed the same idea of deceiving other can be way to protect the person you love and there are right or wrong in
