There are many examples within the play that show how Romeo and Juliet’s developing adolescent brains could have caused them to be more impulsive, have heightened emotions, and engage in more risky behavior. Romeo and Juliet’s actions in the play Romeo
“These violent delights have violent ends and their triumph die, like fire and powder, which, as they kiss, consume” (2.2.66-67). Romeo’s life is crashing down around him and it is trapping his star crossed lover Juliet in his downfall along with him. Romeo vows revenge on Tybalt for the appalling murder of Mercutio. Romeo, in a overwhelmed mindstate, killed Tybalt, unaware of how much tragedy it would bring throughout the remainder of his life. The most destructive decision in Romeo and Juliet was Romeo’s decision to seek revenge on Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, because if Romeo were to not have killed Tybalt, then his future could have been altered and his fate may not have been fatal.
Teenagers, the infamous age in between elementary years and adulthood, have existed since the first human evolved. In Shakespeare’s most well-known tragedy the entire play is based on the behavior of immature teenagers. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Juliet demonstrates to readers through her actions that she reflects the claims in the brochure regarding the teenage brain. Juliet proves to readers throughout the duration of Act I in Romeo and Juliet that her impulsive and rebellious behavior is a result of a developing brain.
Teens will choose to satisfy their feelings and make choices where one may think is irrational or dumb. Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare is a story of romance and an example of teens making bad choices that usually only favor one’s feelings. Three teen characters that fit the behavior description in Romeo and Juliet are Gregory, Sampson, and Romeo. Gregory and Sampson both hate the Montagues (Romeo’s family) which causes them to start fighting them and cause trouble. While Romeo is driven by love and not hate he still makes choices only for his feelings which at the end ultimately lead to his death.
There is a cornucopia of heavily important and critical decisions made in this play but only some of them really made a huge impact. Which decision made was the most critical? In this play, Romeo and Juliet are lovers, but their families are enemies. Therefore, things can’t always go the way they want.
Romeo and Juliet are still kids. They think they are in love with each other, but this kind of emotion for a teen makes them unnecessary actions. In Act 4 scene 1 Juliet decides to go to Fiar Lawrence to fake her death so Romeo can return. That is a crazy idea tot fake your death just to see your boyfriend. In teens brain in construction it says that the brain is trying different and new hormones.
Is there a good outcome when people make decisions quickly? Romeo made a decision when he was told that Juliet was dead. He went to the apothecary and bought poison without telling anyone, then he left to go see his love Juliet with Benvolio. But they know not what they will find at the tomb. Paris and his servant paying peace to Juliet.
People think teens and kids really don't put in the fact that they mature in years and they will become a different person. Romeo and Juliet have got to be the same of most immature teenagers. Romeo and Juliet by “William Shakespeare” are the two main characters that I think have matured somewhat from the begging of the play. Romeo and Juliet most definitely a play on how people can mature in days and can decided whether they want to live or die for one another deciding whether you want to live or die for someone is a big deal to make. For a teen to make that one decision is difficult.
Romeo and Juliet wanted to be together. However, their families are in a long standing feud. So, Romeo and Juliet are secretly married by Friar Lawrence. Then, Romeo kills Juliet’s cousin Tybalt and ends up banished from Verona. Ultimately, they both ended up committing suicide do to a lack of communication and their families rivalry.
The Juvenile brain not being fully developed can cause many problems for the teen because they don't have good decision making skills and are still learning how to make the best decision for the situation. In a article written by Lizzy Griffin in 2017 about The Developing Teenage Brain found that, “...the frontal lobe that sharpens critical thinking isn't well connected. The part of the brain that makes them pause and say to themselves, “‘Bad idea...”(Griffin). This proves that Romeo and Juliet act like realistic teens because throughout the play they make bad decisions in the moment because they didnt stop and think about it similar to how many other teens would have reacted if they were placed in the same situation as them. Furthermore, the adolescent brain is incapable of make the appropriate decision in a timely manner.
In the tragic case of Romeo and Juliet, poor, impulsive decisions cause their death. These decisions, to some extent, are not their fault. Personal choices, made by age and circumstance, have a bigger impact on the characters in the play than “stars” do. In Romeo and Juliet, two teenagers are forced to side with love or their families. They are confused because the development of their mind refrains them from thinking completely by themselves. In this play, two teenagers are apart of a war old as time and the fact that their brains are not fully developed does not help. In the play Romeo and Juliet, the concept of age is often disregarded. This is because the theme of true love between the characters is thought to transcend all societal barriers, most importantly the mutiny of the Capulet and the Montague family. However, taking into consideration the stage of life in which the characters are in serves to provide useful insight as to why they choose to follow through with certain decisions. Romeo and Juliet are both teenagers in the play, and it is known through research that adolescents are largely run by their emotions and greatly valuing reward over possible risk.
