Emotions v. Actions Once a couple falls in deep love with each other, their minds are covered by a dark shadow that prevents rational thinking, which may result in the person making irrational decisions throughout life. There can be many different types of emotions that can lead to such decisions, such as anger, sadness, and even joy. Although these feelings are normal in human life, some people continue to wonder if there is some sort of purpose for these emotions contributing to decision-making. At the end of the day, all humans feel different types of emotions each day, but what factors are used to trigger them? In Act 3 Scene 3, Romeo is spotted hiding in Friar’s cell after murdering Tybalt out of anger caused by Mercutio’s death. This causes Romeo to feel depressed and suicidal as his love for Juliet is limitless, and he will never have the chance to see her again because of his exile. He says to Friar Lawrence, “And sayst thou yet that exile is not death?/Hadst thou no poison mixed, no sharp-ground knife,/No sudden mean of death, though ne’er so mean,/But “banished” to kill me—“banished”? III.iii.43-46. As a result of Romeo’s strong love for Juliet, he explains to Friar Lawrence that he wishes he would be killed as his punishment rather than being banished and forced to be separated from Juliet. Romeo’s sadness can be related to Medieval Courtly love where he will always want attention from his love Juliet, but now that she is far away from him, Romeo is filled with deep sorrow. Therefore, Romeo establishes a massive turning point between his and Juliet’s happiness as Romeo now develops suicidal thoughts which may cause Juliet to soon share the same fate as Romeo due to their separation. Paris has encountered this emotion many times throughout his journey. One of the major examples is shown in the Capulet’s tomb when he planned to visit Juliet and decorate her tomb with flowers and his tears as he promised her before she died. As Paris was walking towards Juliet’s tomb, he tragically encounters Romeo at the tomb as well. Paris thought to himself, “This is that banish’d haughty Montague/That murdered my love’s cousin—with which grief/It is supposed the fair creature died—/And here is come some villainous shame/To the dead bodies. I will apprehend him” (V.iii.49-53). Here, Paris’s emotions are vividly expressed to the audience. His boundless love for Juliet has turned into a great darkness of anger and hate towards Romeo. Paris assumed that it was all Romeo’s fault for Juliet’s death of grief. He believed Romeo killing Tybalt caused Juliet to be heartbroken leading up to her dreadful death. This causes Paris to want to get revenge on Romeo so he pulls out his sword and fights Romeo until his flesh is ultimately wounded, and falls to his death right in front of Romeo. Due to this, Romeo thinks that Paris is another victim of bad luck, just like himself. As a result, Romeo goes to Juliet and drinks the poison that he bought from the apothecary to die next to Juliet peacefully. Similarly, Romeo is also seen expressing the emotion of love strongly.
