R & J Essay: Logic vs. Emotion. Emotion is what makes connections to other people, but using complete emotion when making those connections leads to relationships that burn out after the flame of emotion dies. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, emotions are very high at almost all times. They are both teenagers who fell in love seemingly at first sight but cannot be together. This causes even more distress in the teenagers, making their thinking go more emotional rather than logical the deeper into the story. Ultimately leading to both of them dying due to irrational thinking and thinking with no logic or emotion. At the end of scene 1, Romeo tells his cousin everything he feels from his heartbreak. Romeo seems very down and in despair about his love, never wanting to marry, which causes all of these confusing emotions for Romeo. This gives the impression that he is depressed and heartbroken. Romeo says to Benvolio, “Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast, / Which thou wilt propagate, to have it prest/ With more of thine. This love that thou hast shown/ Doth add more grief to too much of mine own.” (1.1.179-182) In Scene 5 Romeo sees the girl that he loves so much which makes him sad at the Capulet party, however, he forgets all about her as soon as he sees Juliet. His feelings of despair and hopelessness turn into feelings of love and optimism. Juliet makes him start to feel love again and he isn’t depressed or feeling lonely anymore. When Romeo first sees Juliet, he says,” O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear—/Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!/ So chows a snowy dove trooping with crows.” (1.5.42-46) Both scenes show Romeo in completely different mental states
