Can you even believe that the entirety of Romeo and Juliet occurred in only a week? I know for me, I couldn’t believe it. The short timespan of the events definitely contributed to the chaotic feeling that The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet gave. Romeo and Juliet did not actually fall in love with each other in a week because they spent very little time getting to know each other, they got married after knowing each other for only one day, and their love required more time to develop. Patience is everything. The first reason why I think that Romeo and Juliet did not actually fall in love with one another is because they spent very little getting to know each other. After their first encounter with each other at the Capulet party, and then their second encounter on Juliet’s Balcony, they decided to marry each other (Shakespeare 2.2.125-148). Friar Lawrence warns Romeo and Juliet of their fast-paced romance. After Friar Lawrence agrees to wed Romeo and Juliet to each other, he bids Romeo a warning. Friar Lawrence says “ Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast” (Shakespeare 2.3.94) Once again, right before Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and Juliet, he tells Romeo that “These violent delights have violent ends” (Shakespeare 2.6.9). Friar Lawrence then goes on forth to explain that the swiftness of their marriage may lead to more harm then good when he says “And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume.
