Fate is bound to happen! Free will is a choice people make voluntarily. Together they can decide someone's life. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare highlights the different choices and paths the characters face in fate and free will. These choices could have affected some aspects of their life, but not their fate. Although fate is predetermined, other people’s free will can alter multiple individual’s paths of fate. Mercutio and Benvolio, Romeo’s friends, try to convince Romeo to go to the Capulet’s masquerade party to get over his recent heartbreak. Romeo explains he had a dream, telling him not to go to the party. Later in the party Tybalt, a cavalry that they fought with that morning, recognizes Romeo’s voice in the party from hearing it earlier. He tells Capulet that he wants to kill him. Capulet looking for the best interest of the party says “Content thee gentle coz. Let him alone” (1.4.74). It reveals that Tybalt is the unknown force that is trying to end Romeo’s life. Capulet uses his own free will and steps in and prevents Tybalt from killing Romeo, telling Tybalt to leave him alone and calm down. Capulet is an opposing force that pushes back Romeo’s death and changes his path of fate. At the same time, it changes Tybalt’s, Juliets, and his own fate. By letting Romeo live, Capulet caused a whole waterfall of effects to happen. Capulet’s free will allowed Romeo’s opportunity to kill Tybalt while he was hunting down Romeo for attending the party. Juliet’s death was caused by Capulet’s free will. If he allowed Tybalt to kill Romeo, he would never have to rush her into marriage with Paris, a count of Verona, to help her cope with the loss of a close
