Friar the Friend, Not the Fake Throughout history, the archetype of the god-teacher, a kind, educated adult who risks their own safety to aid others, has been prominently displayed in all genres of plays, movies, and books. Shakespeare, a famous Elizabethan Period playwright, incorporated the role of the god-teacher into his classic love story, Romeo and Juliet. In the tragic play, the god-teacher takes the shape of Friar Lawrence. Although some readers don’t see beyond the friar’s failed plan to keep the lovers together, he assists Romeo and Juliet tremendously; furthermore, the plot couldn’t develop without him. After Romeo falls in love with Juliet at the Capulet party, he approaches Lawrence begging for his agreement to marry them. Hearing his young friend’s pleas, the friar declares, “In one respect I’ll they assistant be/For this alliance may so happy prove/To turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (2.3.97-99). As the quote describes, the priest consents to marry the young lovers due to the fact that it could create peace between the Montagues and Capulets. These two wealthy families have been bringing cruelty and chaos to the streets of Verona for many years; therefore, Friar Lawrence has a desire to end the unnecessary feud. His high regard for peace and love prove that he is a god-teacher, for he cares for his community and how the people relate to one another. As well as this, the friar is a trustworthy man since he has a high position in Verona and is often a source of advice for Romeo. Friar Lawrence is easily approachable because of his wisdom and kindness; furthermore, his desire for promoting peace becomes apparent when he listens to Romeo’s pleas. Only someone who cares so deeply for peace and his community would agree to take part in the dangerous feat when it means risking their
