Romeo and Juliet Essay Is the play Romeo and Juliet considered a tragedy? Romeo and Juliet is a play by William Shakespeare that is about two teens who experience young, forbidden love. Romeo and Juliet is considered a tragedy because of death, impetuous decisions, and the “almost” moments. Because of death, this play is considered a tragedy. The Prince is explaining how Romeo died and why they killed themselves. “...Their course of love, the tidings of her death; and here he writes that he did buy a poison of a poor ‘pothecary, and therewithal came to this vault to die, and lie with Juliet. Where be these enemies? Capulet, Montage, see what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!” (V, iii, 298-304). Romeo went to fight Tybalt after Tybalt killed Mercutio. Lord Montague and Prince are discussing the consequences. “Romeo slew Tybalt; Romeo must not live. Romeo slew him; he slew Mercutio. Who now the price of his dear blood doth owe? Not Romeo, Prince; he was Mercutio’s friend; his fault concludes but what the law should end, the life of Tybalt. And for that offence, immediately we do exile him hence.” (III, i, 186-193). Romeo didn’t think about the consequences before he acted on the feeling. If he would’ve thought before he acted, he wouldn’t have been banished. Juliet wouldn’t have had to fake her death so she could run away with Romeo. Paris wouldn’t have died and Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t have killed themselves if Romeo hadn’t acted on that one feeling.
