Romeo and Juliet, a popular play written by William Shakespeare, explores themes of feuds between families, the power of hate, and most importantly, love. The theme of love in the play is a very passionate and reckless kind. Some may say that Romeo and Juliet has nothing to do with love, but the story is definitely one filled with love and passion. Act I Scene I opens with a depressed Romeo, upset that he just split up with his then romantic interest, Rosaline. Romeo states, “ Tut, I have lost myself; I am not here; this is not Romeo, he’s some other where”(Shakespeare 1.1). Romeo is someone who really likes being in love and feels lost without it. During this time the reader sees Juliet being forced into a marriage with Paris, whom she does not love. Juliet does not want to be married to someone she does not truly care about. These two characters are foils to each other, one wants love and one wants independence to make her own choices. Well, opposites attract and at a party they immediately fall for each other. They feel such a connection, that Romeo sneaks into her orchard to talk to her. Romeo could have been killed by a Capulet guard, so he was risking a lot just to speak with Juliet again. They are from feuding families. With Juliet being a Capulet and Romeo being a Montague, their passion has grown from two families burning hatred for each other. “My only love sprung from my only hate”(22). Fate brought these star crossed lovers together despite the two families. They love each other even though they are expected to hate the other. This rivalry causes a lot of obstacles for Romeo and Juliet. From lying and sneaking around, the pair seems to be willing to do anything for each other. This could be an example of the immaturity of their relationship, but also could be one of the pure passion they feel for each
