Many people question the relevance of Shakespeare’s most famous play Romeo and Juliet. Many arguments can be made about it’s relevance or it’s non-relevance. Some think, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is relevant to people in modern times through it’s small acts of familiar love, the odd act of friendship, and large acts of love and devotion. Others disagree and say that it was just a couple of kids trying to be rebellious. Though these all may be true, one must always remember that true love conquers all. One may say that Romeo and Juliet’s relevance is shown through their show of love at first sight. They were a true showing of love at first sight. He not only defended the Montague’s family name, but he also stood up to Tybalt to for Romeo which eventually lead to his death. “O calm, dishonorable, vile submission! Alla stoccata carries it away.” (Shakespeare 1091) Mercutio thinking that Romeo had been afraid to fight stood up for him, by fighting Tybalt for him. Mercutio must have seen this as honorable even though it wasn’t really. Lastly, Romeo and Juliet’s relevance is shown through their familiar love. Even though Juliet’s parents were forcing her to marry Paris, they still loved her, they only wanted the best for their only daughter.
