Shakespeare had a habit of romanticizing grim topics, such as suicide and murder. These are found not only in Romeo and Juliet, but also in the poem of Lucrece, the story of Hamlet, and Macbeth. In the story of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo takes his own life after thinking that his love, Juliet has died, only for Juliet to wake up, finds him dead, subsequently taking her life. They die for each other, then Shakespeare attempts to cover it up with the idea that they are loyal to one another. Suicide is a very serious topic, and should not be romanticized in any way. Similarly, Romeo kills Tybalt to avenge his friend who died in his stead, then later kills Paris to get to Juliet. The two families insist on being separated due to a feud that occurred between them so long ago that they don’t even remember what it was originally about. During this feud, they kill 6 people: Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Tybalt, Lady Montague, and Paris; all because they were all too egotistical as well as arrogant to move past their petty quarrel. It takes their kids’ deaths to grow past their altercation. Additionally, Lord and Lady Capulet attempt to force Juliet into an arranged marriage with someone she expressly disliked. On the topic of second-rate characters, the main characters themselves are a perfect illustration of a poorly written story. Romeo is an extremely rash character, who fails to perceive his next choice. In the beginning of the story, he is shown as depressed, heartbroken after breaking up with his love. Then, the second he sees Juliet, he forgets all about his other relationship. He is shown to be quite a vain character, as he only falls in love with Juliet over her appearance. While she is shown to be wise and crafty later on, he never sees these
