Roy Lichtenstein was a famous artist known for using bright colors and simple scenes to bring newspaper comic strips to a bigger canvas(“Roy Lichtenstein” St. James). Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 27, 1923 in New York. Roy’s father, Milton, owned a real-estate firm. He was born into a “relatively prosperous New York family”(“Roy Lichtenstein” UXL). When Lichtenstein went to school, he did not study art(“Roy Lichtenstein” Encyclopedia). In 1949, Lichtenstein married his first wife and had two sons. They were married for twenty years(“Roy Lichtenstein” UXL). Lichtenstein started out as a teacher, then gave it up to pursue painting full time(“Roy Lichtenstein Encyclopedia).
The pop art movement is artwork that paints images of everyday items with bright colors and simple scenes(“Roy Lichtenstein” St. James). Roy Lichtenstein along with Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, and Claes Oldenburg were all classic artists apart of the pop art movement.. It was created in 1962 by Roy Lichtenstein and is made with oil on a canvas. There are lines in this piece on the hand, spray can, and the spray. The lines give this piece detail in showing the spraying of the contents of the can. There are geometric shapes in the contents of the spray can and organic shape of the hand. Lichtenstein uses bright colors to make the art stand out and give it the cartoon feeling. There is shadowing on the spray can to make it look more real. There are a variety of shapes, lines and colors but there is not too much going on. In the painting, someone is using a spray can to spray whatever is inside of the can.
