Rubio Analysis

Every president has their opinions on particular issues. Three main issues discussed by presidents are foreign, economic, and domestic. Within these categories, all the presidents have the same overall goals, to better America’s education, to help better America’s economy, and to deal with foreign issues such as immigration. Presidential candidate Marco Rubio has some views that agree with presidents of the past, and some that disagree. On the issue of immigration, Rubio has some of the same views as former president Bill Clinton, and some that are different. On the issue of education, Rubio and former president Barack Obama have mostly the same views on education despite Rubio being a republican and Obama being a democrat. One issue with education is the No Child Left Behind law. Marco Rubio supports this law. Under No Child Left Behind, schools that fail to meet Adequate Yearly Progress for 5 years must implement corrective measures, including restructuring or firing the principal and teachers. As an additional consequence for failure, low-income students should be eligible for Opportunity Scholarships to attend another public, charter, private or parochial school, or have access to supplemental online services of their choice. Another former president, Barack Obama thinks that we left the money behind with this law. He says “I’ve had a lot of discussions with teachers. And they feel betrayed and frustrated by No Child Left Behind. We shouldn’t reauthorize it without changing it fundamentally. We left the money behind for No Child Left Behind, and so there are school districts all across the state and all across the country that are having a difficult time implementing No Child Left Behind.” (Source: 2007 Democratic primary debate on “This Week” , Aug 19, 2007). Another issue involving education is early education. Rubio supports this with the head start program. He says “I think programs like Head Start are geared in the right direction in the sense that they're trying to get children educational opportunities as young as possible. I think where those programs can be completed and improved is that we create flexibility in …show more content…

One of the main issues is the economy. Rubio says we need to reduce the national debt with tax cuts. His plan is to deliver a million dollar tax break to the richest 0.1 percent of the country in its first year and slash government revenue by $6.8 trillion over the next decade. To avoid adding to the deficit, it would require spending cuts. Rubio also called for higher military spending, delayed cuts to Medicare and Social Security, and a Balanced Budget Amendment. Another former president, George W Bush had a plan in which he thought he could cut the deficit in half in five years. He said his plan was that “We should limit the burden of government on this economy by acting as good stewards of taxpayers’ dollars. In two weeks, I will send you a budget that funds the war, protects the homeland and meets important domestic needs, while limiting the growth in discretionary spending to less than 4 percent. This will require that Congress focus on priorities, cut wasteful spending and be wise with the people’s money. By doing so, we can cut the deficit in half over the next five years.” (2004 State of the Union address to joint session of Congress , Jan 20, 2004). Another important economical topic is minimum wage. Rubio does not support the minimum wage at all and says “If I thought that raising the minimum wage was the best way to help people increase their pay, I would be all for it, but it isn't. It's a disaster.
