Walt Disney once said, “All dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” Rudy Ruettiger and Shawn Grim had dreams they thought they could pursue. Rudy is a young man who grew up in Illinois, who came from a blue collar family. Shawn grew up in a small town in Appalachia, living in extreme poverty. Their dreams were similar and different in many ways. Rudy wanted to play football at his favorite college, and Shawn just wanted to graduate college. Rudy and Shawn were both determined to succeed at their dreams, but their paths along the way were very different. Rudy and Shawn both struggled with heartbreak reaching for their goals, however, each of their heartaches were different. Rudy worked in a steel mill until one day his best friend died in an accident at his workplace. His heartache for the death of his friend pushed him more to his dream. It was always Rudy’s dream to play for the Notre Dame football team. Ever since he was a little boy, he would say that he was going to be on their football team. After he was accepted into the school, he tried out for the team. Although the coach saw Rudy’s potential, he only put him on the practice team. Finally, with barely any time left in the last game of the season, the coach let Rudy play. Rudy was thrilled and so was everyone he touched in his life. On the other hand, Shawn’s dream was a little different. Shawn’s dream was to go to college and be the first from his family to graduate. Fortunately he earned a football scholarship upon graduating high school but after just eight weeks, he went back home. Unlike Rudy, the challenge was too tough for Shawn and he dropped out.
