For one example, Hurricane Harvey. People from all over the world were able to help the citizens that got hit by hurricane Harvey. Through all of the fundraising, thirty-seven million dollars was raised for the victims of the hurricane, which shows that many people are not selfish. And last but not least, people of northern Texas were able to help and show that they are not selfish by taking in whole families during the recovery of Hurricane Harvey.
Pre-APPE Reflection Jinwon Byun I take an opportunity to come to Lawndale Christian Health Center for my APPE elective rotation because of many reasons. Last year, I volunteered to serve some STEPS sessions. STEPS is a student based organization that serves the underserved communities in Dayton, Ohio. I did general health screening, including blood pressure and blood glucose check, and brief interviews.

Generosity spreads to those in need creates gratitudes to those who dispense.
Today we live in a world where nothing is free, and many people have an expectation on receiving something in return when they provide some sort of service for someone. However, society is helping create a norm of altruism by asking, advertising, and announcing situations when selfless acts are performed. Altruism behavior consists of being selfless and wanting to help others in need, without feeling obligated. Several psychologists define altruism as “a motivational state with the ultimate goal of increasing another’s welfare” (Batson, 1981). Thanks to the media, we are able to witness people demonstrating concerns for the welfare and well-being of others which has helped the encouragement for people to have altruistic behavior.
Through volunteering you interact with people less fortunate and hear their stories. Some people lost their jobs and can't find income. Daniel had a “Personal and Active Faith in God” which he demonstrated successfully through his faithfulness towards God, Christianity and most importantly his people. Daniel’s personal and active faith was conveyed through his significant messages and visions that had important meanings and warnings for the future.
If you aren’t helping, what are you doing? Some people today, are being “generous” for all the wrong reasons: to fulfill volunteer hours or to set an image. We need people to check their moral intentions before believing they are “helping” the community. In other words, people cause more damage to others when having the wrong intentions when it comes to charitable work. If we don’t, we create a society that pities those who suffer in order create a positive image for an individual.
I am sure that you all have been told to give back, but have you done it? A lot of ourselves make a promise that we ae going to do something good. Most of us don 't do it. In the short stories "Thank you Ma 'am" by Langston Huges and "Upon the Waters" by Joanne Greenberg, the main characters are people who sympathize with others and give back because they have been there. Both stories center around the theme of giving back by doing what you can because you know what they are going through.
