Have you ever been told to pray to Saint Anthony when you lost something important? Well that's probably because he is the patron saint of finding lost objects! Due to the recurring loss of many of my items, I have prayed to him countless times in the past two weeks. Saint Anthony, is a very important saint to my family and I. By examining his life, why he is a saint, and his connections to my family and I, you will find that he is a very interesting person. Saint Anthony, a Franciscan portuguese priest, who later became a great saint of the church, lived a exceedingly holy life, which shaped him to become the saint he is today. When he was asked to give the homily by Franciscan and Dominican friars, this sparked his preaching career. Describing his homily, the article, “St Anthony of Padua” on www.catholic.org, states, “Not only his rich voice and arresting manner, but the entire theme and substance of his discourse and his moving eloquence, held the attention of his hearers.” Later on, he was sent to franciscan province of Romagna, based in Bologna, by Brother Gratian. There he came into contact with Francis of Assisi, whom he entrusted the pursuit of studies of any of his friars to the care of Anthony. In addition, a incident in Bologna, led Anthony to become patron saint of finding lost possessions. Anthony had a book of psalms that contained notes that he used teach his students. Due to the value of books at the time, a novice who was leaving decided to take the book with him. Anthony prayed that the book would be found or returned and the thief was moved to return the book and rejoin the order. Occasionally, Anthony, took the post as a teacher, but it was as a preacher he revealed his supreme gift. The article, “Saint Anthony of Padua”, states, “According to historian Sophronius Clasen, ‘Anthony preached the grandeur of Christianity.’” After preaching in France, he was appointed provincial superior of northern Italy; he chose Padua as his location.
