Helen Jewett was born in Temple, Maine on October 18, 1883. Helen's mother died while she was still a child and her alcoholic father soon followed her to the grave. With no parents or guardians that could watch over her, Helen was orphaned and later adopted by a local judge who provided her with a good family and education. Helen also worked as a servant during her stay with the family and after growing into a beautiful young woman, she developed sexual assertiveness and was rumored to be involved with a banker in a scandalous affair. After Helen's 18th birthday, she moved out of the house and began working as a prostitute in Portland, Maine.

Future poet Lucy Terry was born in West Africa. The exact date of her birth is unknown, though it is thought she might have been born as early as the 1720s. Historical records on Lucy’s life are extremely limited and thus details of her history have been taken away from scholarly research and conjecture. Lucy was captured when she was a very young girl by slave traders who brought her to Rhode Island. There she was believed to have been first bought by Samuel Terry, who lived in Enfield, Connecticut.
Another well known abolitionist and worker of the Underground Railroad is Levi Coffin. He was born in North Carolina. In his youth, he always believed that slavery was wrong. During his childhood, he lived near a place where slaves were chained together.

With the help of her father, she began performing at a young age. By the time she was 18, she had become the first woman to chart a top ten hit on the Hot 100 with a song she wrote herself. In the following years, Carla Thomas became known as the Queen of Memphis Soul, the counterpart to the “King,” Otis Redding. Her music greatly influenced the Memphis sound and transformed Southern Soul music forever.

Sarah Ellen is a 28-year-old female with Down Syndrome, she was the second born of three children. She resides in Cleveland, Ohio with her parents, where she works at her mother’s fabric and quilting shop and runs her own Etsy shop, Down Right Charming. Her first year of life came with many complications including, open heart surgery and a tracheotomy. As an adult, Sarah Ellen no longer has her tracheostomy tube, yet still deals with breathing issues that, at times cause her to collapse, she has a wheelchair available when she will be walking far lengths (Ely). Born on September 13, 1943, Mildred Delois Taylor from Jackson, Mississippi is a remarkable author who is famous for books that feature topics of segregation, discrimination, and the hardships faced when "born in a segregated city in a segregated state in segregated America" (Mildred Taylor). Due to this, her family moved to Ohio to provide a safer environment for Mildred and her sister Wilma. Despite the effort, Mildred was still witness of racial discrimination all throughout her life, specially because she continued to visit her family in the South. Thankfully, her visits inspired her writing as she listened to true stories, mainly told by her father, "of the dignity and survival of the people living in a society that allowed them few rights
Sally Ride is most commonly known for being the first American women to travel to space, though this was an amazing accomplishment she has done so much more. Even Though she died on July 23, 2012 from pancreatic cancer, her legacy and story will live on through those who work with her and the people that look up to her Sally Kristen Ride was born on May 26, 1951, in Encino, California to Joyce and Dale Ride. Dale Ride was a political science professor, he was one of Sally Ride's biggest mentors and though he lacked knowledge in the field he helped Ride cultivate her interest (Saari 1997). Ida Tarbell: Making a Difference in the World From breaking the rules to mending them, Ida Tarbell has played a crucial role in making the world a better place for businesses, workers, and citizens. She always fought for what she believed in and wrote the truth about the world surrounding her. Ida would stop at nothing until she found the answers that she was looking for and wouldn’t let anyone get in her way. She was a fearless woman who didn’t let the rules of society hold her back. Ida was a great muckraker during the late 1870’s, and up until the beginning of World War II, in 1944.
Annie Clark Tanner was born on September 24, 1864 in Farmington Utah. Annie was born into a polygamist family and grew up her entire life centered around polygamy. She was proud to be born into a family that practiced this type of life style. She was an obedient young child and always look forward to spending time with her parents.
When closely examining one of her famous portrait photography with Demi Moore, the image she took was sharp and it showed the details of the person’s face. Her portraits she took almost all of them had a dark contrast background along with her subjects having enough light reflected on them to make the picture clear and crisp. The contrast she chosen makes the photos of Demi Moore look more elegant. Her style of photography also makes the subject look natural and not forced; the subjects are showing their real emotion. Harriet Ann Jacobs is the first Afro-American female writer to publish the detailed autobiography about the slavery, freedom and family ties. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent to keep the identity in secret. In the narrative, Jacobs appears as a strong and independent woman, who is not afraid to fight for her rights. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure. Frequently, the slave narratives were written by men where they fight against the slavery through literacy by showing their education.
