The inspiration of being the final caregiver to my aged mother in law, provided me with the first-hand experience of the treatment of the aged in our society, the good, bad and the ugly. I found my voice in trying to be her advocate, at first it was met with disregard, however, my persistence to treat her final days with dignity was finally accepted. I would endeavor to have the belief, that we all deserve a semblance of dignity, most especially those who have lived a full life be adopted by all. Especially those in the healthcare field. Additionally, I would endeavor to provide the education needed in order to reverse the maltreatment and disregard towards the aged. Understanding biological, cognitive as well as psychosocial aspects, and cultural beliefs can enhance my understanding of the individual and how they process emotions and crisis. Having the foundation afforded me by this degree I will be knowledgeable and have the proficiency to work with many people from all cultures, races, and ethnicities. Disseminating ideas, connecting theories, as well as the possibility of changing policies as well as being an advocate for injustice coupled with my natural tendency for empathy and advocating for those in need, fulfills the natural social worker in me. Therefore, being able to attain my MSW would supply the education for my passion. The ability to work well with others as well as individually, in addition to my experience as a peer tutor can benefit my fellow classmates, my school and myself. The ability to connect with peers and instructors can only enhance the learning environment, for all.
