Satisfied or Discontented? The majority of Americans live their lives in hopes of achieving the American Dream of success and happiness. In order for Americans to achieve the American Dream, they must have a successful job. However, more and more Americans are becoming discontented with their jobs and their workplace. A variety of factors determine whether or not an employee is satisfied or discontented. Safety concerns, hours worked, and relationships with co-workers are a few of the factors that can determine an employee’s satisfaction within the workplace. Without happy, effective employees companies will fail to be successful. Job satisfaction and discontentment are critical to the success of employees within a company as well as to the company itself. Safety concerns within the workplace are pivotal to determining an employee’s satisfaction or discontentment with a job. Physical safety is important while at work. If security is not available when needed, it could lead to increased criminal activity around employees (White 4). For the employee who has family commitments, the hours scheduled and worked by an employee can impact their job satisfaction or discontentment. Hours that allow an employee to be home evenings with his family lead to a satisfied employee (Slaydon 2). Subsequently, having flexible hours can be more beneficial to the employee who is still in high school or college.
