Aldo is a year 8 student with a weakness in mathematics. He struggles with his written work in class and hopes to only pass the class. However, during a soccer game, he was able to adequately complete and explain mathematical equations to his classmates. This shocks his teacher and evokes her curiosity as to how to get Aldo to complete his work in class adequately. As a teacher, it is hard to help each student reach their full potential, however, each teacher should try as it is important for all students to be able to reach their full potential. A problem schema "is a general description of a group of problems that share underlying structure requiring similar solutions" (The Effect of Schema-Based Instruction in Solving Mathematics Word Problems). Research demonstrates that problem schemata exist and are used to solve problems in arithmetic, algebraic equation, geometry, and physics (The Effect of Schema-Based Instruction in Solving Mathematics Word Problems). The first stage of problem solving is associated with identification of the problem using schema based knowledge. The second stage involves representing the problem the relation with the situation. Vygotsky was interested in the differences child had when referring to cognitive development (Educational Psychology 2013). Vygotsky claims infants are born with their intelligence which is based on prenatal and genetic disposition and that children develop as a community and not as individuals (Educational Psychology 2013 ). Human mental abilities are in two categories; lower and higher mental functioning and children learn to have higher mental functioning. Children are also claimed to learn predominantly from language and social interaction (Educational Psychology 2013).
