But with a later start time, teens would be more likely to stay awake and focused during class because they are well-rested. Also, having more time in the morning before school means they could have time to study for a test and/or eat breakfast. When we had a two-hour delay, I was able to study for a test before school because it was easier for me to get up, which allowed me extra time to get ready.
However, there are reasons to allow the start time of the school day to remain as it is, and there are reasons to change that to a different time. Some of these reasons for a change are that students receive better grades when they are well rested when they arrive at school, they are better focused on their lessons, the students experience calmer attitudes which leads to fewer discipline problems, and they achieve higher grades. Others may argue that a change in the time will affect the parent's’ ability to transport their child or children to and from school or it will prevent the student and the family from participating in extracurricular activities. Although parents might not be able to drop their children off, school time should be later because students will benefit from the change. Many people argue whether school start times should stay the same or become later in the day.
