Employers should hire a certified person in charge of health and safety, however in small businesses that person is usually the owner or a trusted member of staff.

When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse,another example is abuse by strangers,when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes,they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.

There are several procedures that help to maintain this health and safety however they can all vary between settings for example, health and safety procedures will be slightly different and more focused on certain areas in hospitals and especially in paediatric ward compared to in drop-in centres where the needs and risk to service users are slightly different. Some of the procedures used in health and social care to maintain health and safety include; infection control and prevention, safe moving and handling of equipment and individuals, food preparation and storage, storage and administration of medication and storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
Down syndrome is a condition which extra genetic material slows down the way in which an individual develops, both physically and mentally. As stated by the NHS; each individual with down syndrome is affected differently and can vary, some may need a lot of medical assistance whereas others may lead a normal healthy lifestyle but share similar characteristics. Delayed development: All service users with down syndrome has some degree of learning difficulty and delayed development, however, this varies between each individual. Having down syndrome they may experience some health problems which may effect them in every day life. However yet again each individual is different some may have more health problems than others.

Everyone has the right to have their needs assessed and the care that is being provided, should be tailored to meet an individual’s needs to enable them to live in their own homes. We know that Mary is an elderly lady who is very independent, however there has been a change in Mary’s circumstances and under this piece of legislation Mary is entitled to have her needs met whether it be through referral or a change in circumstance. Those involved in this assessment will be social work who will take the lead on the case, Mary and her family, doctors or nurses and carers. Under the Social

Control of substances and Hazardous to Health Regulations 1992 These regulations inform practices that cleaning materials must to be kept in a locked cupboard. Also, these regulation state that disposable gloves and aprons must to be provided for cleaning and handing chemicals.
