“Loyalty and devotion can lead to bravery. Bravery leads to the spirit of self-sacrifice. The spirit of self-sacrifice creates trust in the power of love (Morihei Ueshiba).” This shows that Rikki Tikki Tavi, the mongoose, is brave and loyal character to his friends and family throughout the story because of the inspiration he got from them. The theme of the fictional story, Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, teaches that great things come out of the acts of courage. Rikki Tikki is a curious and courageous character in the story. To illustrate, “There are more things to find out about in this house,” he said to himself, “than all my family could find out in all their lives. I shall certainly stay and find out. For example, “So long as the bungalow is empty, we are king and queen of the garden; and remember that as soon as our eggs in the melon bed hatch (as they may tomorrow), our children will need room and quiet (para 51).” This demonstrates the fact that Nagaina is selfish and wants the house and garden to herself and family so they by themselves can rule the garden and live a happy life while the rest of the creatures live miserably. Selfishness is very different from courage because when you are selfish, you are most of the time never loyal to friends or enemies. When you are selfish, good things don’t come out of bad acts of character. In addition, “Nagaina lifted up her head and hissed, “You warned Rikki-tikki when I would have killed him. Indeed and truly, you’ve chosen a bad place to be lame in.” And she moved toward Darzee’s wife, slipping along over the dust (para 76).” As a result, this shows that Nagaina is unforgiving and holds a grudge against Rikki Tikki for killing Nag, her husband, even though he was only trying to protect the rest of the animals in the garden. Being unforgiving gets you nowhere while being loyal can get you friends you can trust and also getting trust from your friends. Rikki tikki decided to be loyal to Darzee the bird and his family, Chua the muskrat, and the humans which brought trust from those animals and people.
