One of the oldest promotional decision process is the seniority decision process. It was thought that if an individual was with a company for a long time, that individual would automatically have seniority and be eligible to receive the promotion. However, companies today do not rely on seniority to promote individuals. Promotions are not about how long you have been with the company but if you have the knowledge and skill to performance the duties. When deciding on whether an individual is capable of doing the job, it is not how the manager personally feels based on the individual age or longevity with the company. For a company to thrive and succeed it required good and effective employees. The company should begin to hire smart with the hiring manager. The hiring manager should possess the knowledge and leadership skill to understand the company vision and goals to be successful. An effective manager will then have the insight to hire smart and to choose individual that will be a perfect fit for the company.
Once the manager hires the perfect employee then they must provide adequate direction. If an employee is not given proper direction on how to effectively complete their duties then they can not successfully succeed within the company. Training manuals are effective guidelines to help managers to provide detailed explanation on what is required from the employee. The manual also serves as a point of reference for the employee to refer to if clear direction is not given by the manager. To separate personal from business is the key assure fairness within the company. In order to keep fairness in the company the owner, should first set ground rules for family and non-family employees. There should be clear and concise instruction given to all employees on what is required from them and should adhere to all guidelines and policies within the business. For example, if everyone will be hire and terminate based on the same guidelines or will there be given a different set of guidelines for hiring and termination procedures for family. There should also be stated at the hiring process if family member will be considered for advancement based on the same performance promotion process and non-family members.
Another key aspect to assure fairness in a small business is to confront family issues head on. All employees should be treated with fairness whether they are family or not. If family members have a disagreement that are not part of the work place, the manager must make sure the disagreement does not affect the business. There should be a plan in place that if problems arise with family member, what are steps needed to take place to resolve the problems immediately. If the problem can not be solved, then will there be a termination procedure
