As more and more of the public establish questions on sexual orientation and the legalization of gay couple, I started this study in order to find out the public opinion towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). The study of sexual orientation is important because this issue can affect the morality in the society or in the whole world. Religion and law would be under challenge. By researching on the topic “Is same sex marriage acceptable in the society?”, we can understand which group of the population favours it more, and analyze the reason of it.

According to Oxford dictionary, one of the definition of Gay is “ Foolish, stupid, or unimpressive”(“Gay”, 2015). This shows that under the pressure and the traditional idea towards LGBT, they are automatically tagged with those words. In a journal entitled “Assessing Beginning Social Work and Counseling Students Acceptance of Lesbians and Gay Men” done in 2001, “15% of the sample expressed negativity [towards people who are gay or lesbian]…” (Newman 273). 2,873 people were being involved in this survey. Students usually relate to people aged in 10-25 years old, which fit in this research’s target group. This shows that there are still a minority of people feel uncomfortable to these people. In relate to education level to LGBT acceptance, A poll was done by Pew Research Centre, which is a organized think tank in America, shows that in 2010, “A majority (52%) of college graduates favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally. Support is much lower among those without a college degree – 46% with some college education and 34% with a high school education or less support same-sex marriage.” (Same-Sex Marriage, 2010). People with higher education level tends to accept same sex marriage happening in their society. People who are in school usually are child, aged 6-12, and in their puberty stage. Puberty stage is important to an individual due to it is the stage where they start to show sexual interest. People in this stage would determine their sexual orientation and sexual identity. In 2011, Winner, Collishaw, Kritzer and Warecki concluded that sexual orientation can adapt in Sigmund Freud’s Psychosexual stages of development. Transition from stage 3 (Phallic stage) to 4 (Latency Stage) is important to the individual’s sexual orientation since if some problem unresolved can lead to “weak sexual identity” (p.74).
