Reading Impact When I was a child my mother would read Guess How Much I Love You to me every night before I went to sleep. This nightly routine began just as I turned one, so at a young age I was encouraged that reading was fundamental. For five years I read this book daily; and as a result; I was able to learn how to read independently. Paul Auster, an American writer and director, once said, “Reading was my escape and my comfort (Auster 1)”, I also found reading to be a comfort and it reminded me of my mother. I am very grateful for the exposure I was able to obtain at the age I did; but on the other hand, there are many children who were not as fortunate as I was. There are many children who have lived, and still do, in an environment that has set them up to fail. Sherman Alexie, an award-winning author, has experienced this struggle first hand. Alexie was raised on an Indian reservation where the majority of his peers were expected to be “stupid”. He was able to teach himself to look at the world in the same way he would read a book. The rise of children enjoying to read most likely is due to the amount of exposure they are given to reading every day. Social media is at an all time high in popularity and through posts and comments; young children are able to practice their reading abilities.
