Educators and students alike have historically argued over the significances of offering various alternative language courses. One recent yet continuing argument that takes place on American college campuses is the importance of college students taking foreign language classes. The issue that bothers students is whether or not the foreign language courses should be required to graduate from college. Some people believe that this idea is overstepping set boundaries, while others believe that it is progressive steps in the right way. The absurd idea that the rest of world will conform and learn standard American English is laughable. People who believe this usually use examples from their past foreign languages courses and personal anecdotes. These people also believe that this is a waste of money and time that the colleges could have used the money for other programs. College kids are also discouraged from taking extra language courses due to the amount of other school work they have. Dissenters also believe that students who learn foreign languages are only conforming to the drastic demographic change instead of keeping “good ole American values”. Some people are afraid of being the minority in the coming times and enjoy forcing their Standard English on non-English speakers. The ignorance of this ideology will only further set America behind the other 1st world countries, which are already investing in the youth and producing graduates who are ready for the multicultural world.
