Should Cursive Writing Be Taught In Schools

Taught more than thirty decades ago, cursive writing has a famed and legendary past. It was once a vital element of American education but is now becoming an archaic artefact as technology advancement and the requirement of more regulated tests push it out of the education system. Cursive writing should be scrapped out of the education system for there is no need of wasting time and resources to continue teaching a skill that won’t be beneficial to the students in the near future.

Since technology has been taking over society, schools think it is better if kids get more familiar with technology. Just think, if you can’t write in cursive then you can write a check or write your signature. You definitely won’t be able to read anything in cursive if you don’t learn it.Plus scientists have proved that when u learn cursive and read cursive you use a different part of your brain than when you would read regular print. Learning cursive is good for kid’s motor skills and writing longhand generally helps student retain more information and generate more ideas. Mostly everything in history is written in cursive, like the Declaration of Independence. Studies have also shown that kids who learn cursive rather than simply manuscript writing score better on reading and spelling tests, perhaps because the linked-up cursive forces writers to think of words as wholes instead of parts. Some people suffer brain injuries that damage their ability to write and understand print—while their ability to comprehend cursive remains.
Cursive writing requires a very different skill set from print writing. It involves using the hand muscles in a different way. Additionally, it activates a different part of the brain than regular writing does.
